How to Store Coffee Beans So They Stay Fresh and Aromatic

Even great coffee beans lose their aroma fast if stored the wrong way. Here's how to store whole beans and ground coffee at home.

How to Store Coffee Beans So They Stay Fresh and Aromatic

Coffee freshness has four main enemies: air, light, heat and moisture. Store your beans the right way and they'll stay aromatic to the last scoop.

Keep them in an airtight container Move the coffee into an airtight, opaque jar — or keep it in its original bag if it has a one-way valve and a zip lock. Press out the air before sealing.

Keep away from heat and sunlight Put it in a cool, dark kitchen cupboard — not next to the stove, a window or a hot coffee machine.

No need for the fridge The fridge is humid and full of food smells. Temperature changes every time you open the bag make the coffee sweat and go stale faster. If you want to keep it longer than a month, split the coffee into small bags and freeze the ones you won't use soon — take out one bag at a time and don't refreeze it.

Grind right before brewing Ground coffee loses its aroma much faster than whole beans. If you can, buy whole beans and grind just what you need each time.

How long do coffee beans stay good? - Whole beans: best 1–4 weeks after roasting, still fine for about 2–3 months if stored well. - Ground coffee: ideally used within 1–2 weeks of opening.

That's why we roast in small batches every week. Pick your favorite coffee beans — available whole or ground for your brewer.
